Fossil fuels drove the industrial revolution. They still do, their combustion emissions however are green house gases, which cause global warming. The industrial transition and the astounding power and wealth it produced for the human condition, required lots of energy. The green transition is driven by ecology (climate change) but also by technology (IT) and economy. This transition will require even more energy. However, this energy will be better (economically) managed.
The green transition does not decouple or exclude fossil fuels from the energy mix. Nuclear energy (reactions), alternative fuels (like hydrogen) and renewables (like solar) will change the equation. Technology (IT) however means (improved) energy, capital and resource management, administration, regulation and governance. These will be the real game changers in ecology and economy.
Modern, well maintained coal, oil & gas internal combustion engines and hybrid electric devices produce much less green house emissions, quantitative and qualitative. They are much more environmentally friendly than they used to be. Technology, maintenance, management and operation control, is the key to this economic transformation. IT kicks in right here and makes the difference. Better technology and improved management is more advanced, environmentally friendly, green, economic and technological function. The transition to EVs for example is driven by green, ecological and climate change concerns. It is equally driven by new automation (systems, standards and devices) and urban infrastructure and transportation development (patterns and networks) managed with IT utilities.
Technology and management means ecological biodiversity protection and conservation of natural resources and eco habitats. This includes forestation and ocean protection which are key to keeping the planet cool. It also includes pollution, waste management and environmental degradation control.
The exact configuration of energy and green policy in Trump 2.0, we will have to see. The green transition is still economy and market for fossil fuels and in fact important one. It will remain so in the foreseeable future for the reasons explained. Energy technologies and sources are complementary, not competing. This makes less likely that the U.S. will decouple from the international treaties in Trump 2.0 and more likely that the new administration will review the issues with renewed interest.
Fossil fuel combustion, therefore fire control, historically drove the industrial revolution but more so developed human civilisation, transformation and evolution. Energy management and control are much more original and for this reason, existential in humanity, biology and beyond.
The ecological, technological and economic challenge is immense. Nature will test a part of it. This part is humanity.
This meaning energy and nature will test, information, intelligence, management, administration, regulation and governance, for sustainable development and economic growth.
