What are farmers in the EU required to do to protect the environment?.

Farming is food. Food is metabolism. Metabolism is biology. Biology is life. Life is energy (evolution and transformation).
Farming is agriculture. Agriculture is culture and civilisation.
Biological metabolism is eating and breathing. Neurological metabolism is human, technical, technological, ecological and economic.
Farming, humanity and civilisation, are parts of nature and of natural evolution.
Stability is balance and balance is reason, motion and moderation.
Economy and technology are energy management and metabolic (transformative) functions. Ecology is moderate, conservative, transformative and sustainable, economic and technological.
The farmers are agriculture professionals and they know their business and occupation. Produce the food energy, produce good products and keep people happy, the public active and the populations fed and alive. Farmers are professionals. Agriculture is their science and trade. Agriculture is green. The farmers are scholars, who know their job.
Taste is aesthetic. Fashion is taste. Agriculture is big deal, but farming is not that big deal for the professional farmers. It is bigger deal for the regulators.
Legislation and regulation are macro, not micro, administration and management functions. The EU administration is a regulation authority. They are also regulation professionals. They respect politics and know that agriculture has political power, for the said reasons. Plus, agricutlure has significance in rural and urban development, natural and human, green, ecological and economic, technical and technological.
